Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "... Every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere."
The military provides opportunities for careers, training, education, and future stability by way of retirement and veteran benefits. As a part of a career service people are able to secure basic benefits such as healthcare, as well all hope to. Now all of these wonderful opportunities and benefits that are offered to most will be taken away from transgender individuals. What group is next on the agenda to be faced with a ban? Who will be forced into military service by a draft because too many bans on willing individuals have been passed?
The dictionary describes discrimination as, "the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex." The ban of transgender people from the military is a personal attack on a particular group of individuals. An attack on an already marginalized and underrepresented population. We should all be afraid to see the implementation of policies that are at the intersection of prejudice and discrimination.
